Leonard Adkins

Profiled by Backpacker magazine, and referred to as “The Habitual Hiker,” Leonard M. Adkins has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail five times, walked more than 19,000 miles, exploring backcountry areas of North America, Europe, and the Caribbean, and is the author of 17 books about the outdoors and travel, including 50 Hikes in Northern Virginia, 50 Hikes in Southern Virginia, and Walking the Blue Ridge: A Guide to the Trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway. His latest book is Images of America: Along Virginia’s Appalachian Trail, with approximately 200 vintage photographs that provide a look at life in the mountains before and during the trail’s creation, how it came into being, who its early champions were, the many relocations the trail has experienced, and the volunteers who have constructed and maintained it.
